Four types of COVID 19 testing is available -

• RTPCR test - Travel requirements
• Rapid Antigen test - Employer back to work requirements
• Serology Antibody test
• Rapid Antibody test

In the PCR testing, the viral RNA genetic information is detected. Nasal swab is used to collect the sample. The sample is then sent to the lab, with the result available the same day or next day via email. Priority for this testing is for those with suspected exposure to infection. This is the recommended test for travelers.

In the Rapid Antigen testing, Nasal swab or saliva is used to collect the sample. The sample is then processed in the clinic itself, with the result available in 15 minutes. Priority for this testing is for those with suspected exposure to infection. Many airlines are asking for this test 4 hours prior to boarding.

The serology testing looks for the presence of antibodies in the blood. The antibodies could be IgM or IgG.

• IgM - signifies active infection and is positive during the infection
• IgG - signifies past infection

For this test, blood is drawn from the patient and serum is sent to the lab. The results are available in 3-5 days.

This is a rapid test which also looks for presence of antibodies IgM and IgG in the blood. Sample is taken from a finger-stick and results are obtained within 15mins.
