Medical Assistant Roles and Responsibilities
The Medical Assistant will be responsible for assisting physicians in patient care and
assisting with general office tasks.
Welcoming patients to the office
o Checking the schedule before patients arrive
o Greeting patients by name when they arrive
o If the patient does not have a photo on file, taking a photo of the patient and
uploading that photo into the electronic medical record
Obtaining vital signs
o Bringing the patient to the exam room to have them set down their things
o Bringing the patient to the scale to check their height and weight
o Obtaining pulse oximetry, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure
o Preferred technique for blood pressure readings are taking them with the patient
seated in the chair next to the exam table, with their arm resting at heart level
Assisting physicians will necessary tasks
o Assisting with Pap testing
o Assisting with procedures
o Setting up the necessary equipment prior to the procedure taking place
Drawing blood
o Spinning blood in the centrifuge
o Ensuring that the doctor has printed the correct labels
o Labeling the specimen containers
o Grabbing the requisition sheet from the printer
o Placing the requisition sheet into the lab bag with the specimen vials
Giving immunizations
o Checking with the doctor to make sure the correct immunization is given to the
correct patient at the correct site
Cleaning rooms once physicians/patients are finished
o Wiping down any surfaces
o Emptying trash if full
o Changing the table paper
Attend monthly staff meetings
o Contributing any information that can help the office run more smoothly
Emailing/Texting/Calling patients to confirm appointments
o Looking ahead in the schedule to see who has an appointment
o Anticipating the needs of our patients
